About the station

Deutschlandfunk Kultur is a commercial-free cultural program, best known for its elaborate radio plays and feature productions. The program managers emphasize “the culturalization of politics and the politicization of culture.” The program structure includes daily literature, two different music focuses, and a one-hour interview. At its core is the Studio 9 format, which provides “discursive reporting, cultural criticism, commentary, and features” in the morning, at noon, and again in the evening. Deutschlandfunk Kultur offers the only national children's radio program, which airs daily under the name Kakadu. At night, Tonart broadcasts music with daily changing focuses. Several times a week after midnight, programs on new music or sound art are also aired. On weekends, the thematic spectrum is expanded to include cinema, theater, media, philosophy, and religion.
